A Local Cause: What is the Nipissing Serenity Hospice?
When someone in our community is facing their final journey, they deserve to be treated with dignity, comfort, and compassion. That’s exactly what the Nipissing Serenity Hospice provides.
Located right here in North Bay, the hospice is a 10-bed, bilingual residential home that offers 24-hour palliative care. It serves residents across the Nipissing and East Parry Sound Districts.
What sets this incredible place apart? It’s the holistic approach. The specialized team—including nurses, social workers, and volunteers—looks after not just the physical needs but also the emotional, social, and spiritual well-being of residents and their families. Best of all, this vital care is provided free of charge to everyone who needs it.
The hospice is a true pillar of our community.
Join My Team: Why I’m Raising Funds for the Hike for Hospice
As a mortgage agent and a community member, I see the importance of a strong, caring support system where we live. This is why I am personally dedicating my efforts to raise funds for the Hike for Hospice.
The work at the Nipissing Serenity Hospice offers a profound gift: it lets families go back to being just that—family. When a loved one is in the hospice, spouses, children, and friends are relieved of the exhausting caregiver role. They can instead focus entirely on spending quality time together, creating lasting memories, and finding peace.
By fundraising for the Hike for Hospice, I’m helping to ensure this unique environment of peace and dignity remains available for every North Bay family who will need it in the future. Support the hospice with me.
The Event Details: How to Join the Hike for Hospice
The Hike for Hospice is the hospice’s signature annual fundraiser, and this year is a big one—it marks its 10th anniversary! Over the years, this event has raised over $656,000 for local end-of-life care. Last year alone, the community raised an incredible $115,108!
This year’s community goal is to raise $100,000. Whether you prefer walking with a crowd or hiking your local trails, there’s a way for everyone to participate.
In-Person vs. Virtual: Choose Your Path
The event is designed to be a hybrid celebration, allowing you to choose the experience that works best for you and your family.
- The In-Person Celebration: Join the community on Friday, October 10th, at 12:00 PM at the Nipissing Serenity Hospice (799 John Street, North Bay). The event kicks off with speeches and awards, followed by a warm-up and a short hike around the neighbourhood. The best part? There’s a delicious BBQ by donation waiting for you back at the hospice!
- The Virtual Hike: Can’t make it to the in-person event? You can hike, walk, run, or bike anywhere, anytime throughout the long Thanksgiving Weekend (October 10–13). Just register, collect your donations online, and celebrate your accomplishment in your own local area with friends and family.
Beyond Funding: The Real Impact on North Bay Homeowners
As homeowners in North Bay, we all understand the value of stability and investing in our community. You work hard to make sure your family has a secure future. Supporting the Nipissing Serenity Hospice is another way to secure the well-being and compassionate future of our community.
A stable community is one that takes care of its most vulnerable members. Knowing that a facility like the Nipissing Serenity Hospice is here for you, your neighbours, or your loved ones, offers a profound peace of mind. It’s an assurance that, at the most difficult time, high-quality, dignified care is accessible right in our backyard.
Securing the Future: Investing in Our Local Well-Being
While the hospice receives some government funding, that money is strictly limited to direct clinical care—that covers salaries for nurses and personal support workers.
To keep the lights on, to feed residents, to run the essential grief and bereavement services, and to maintain the beautiful facility, the hospice must raise approximately $1.3 million annually. That’s where the Hike for Hospice comes in.
Every step you take, and every dollar you donate, goes toward those essential non-clinical costs:
- Providing toiletries and food for residents.
- Funding the Serenity Through Support group, which is free for those grieving.
- Maintaining the peaceful grounds and gardens for residents and families.
